Casual, With Tattoos

Secondhand finds and being yourself: that’s style

by Carrie-May Siggins

Who: Taneille Young

Where: Somewhere Cathedral neighbourhoody

Taneille, 22, works at the 13th Avenue Coffee Shop most mornings. You can tell she's no Hot Topic poser - she seems perfectly comfortable in her well-inked skin. When Taneille 's not pulling shots, she's apprenticing at the Planet Caravan tattoo parlour. Even the way she landed that job is atypical. Although she has loved tattoos since she was barely a teen, she never thought about getting behind the ink gun. But the owners saw potential in her and asked her to apprentice. She reluctantly agreed. She's now obsessed and wants to become a tattoo artist.

How would you describe your look? Your style?

The kind of music I love influences my style a lot. I listen to a lot of metal and stoner music. I just keep it easy. I wear a lot of band shirts. Most of the time my style's really lazy. I like to keep it simple. I like to wear the same thing going out and working, so I don't really dress up too often. Very casual.

Your style reflects the music you love. That's great. When did you get your tattoos?

I got my first one when I was 16

Didn't you need fake ID? Or did a friend of yours do them for you?

You can get tattooed when you're 16 with parental consent. Mom promised she would get me one when I turned 16. So I got my whole chest done, 'cause I thought, it needs to be big - it's free.

Wow. So your mom supports your…

Oh, yeah. She's full-bodied [tattooed.]

Other than the free tat, does your mom influence your style?

Kinda. I borrow all her clothes. And she used to listen to the same kind of music, but now she just listens to the radio.

Where did you get your Moccasins?

My boyfriend got them in PA. Wherever he got them.

Do you shop vintage?

I don't know that I shop specifically anything one way or the other. I'm really poor. Value Village is usually where it's at.

Do you usually find what you need at VV?

For the most part, yes, like this plaid shirt. Black T-shirts, band T-shirts. Black skirts. Tights. That's all I really go for. Comfortable.
