Shiplack walks in Scotland’s mighty shoes

Who: Mike Shiplack
Where: Comic Readers

He's a creative writer for Rawlco Radio by day and a man-about-town by night. When he's not travelling all over the world, he's testing your brain at O'Hanlon's Pints and Prose Trivia. Meet Mr. Mike Shiplack.

How would you describe your style?

Very well put together - not really thinking about what goes with what. I don't really dress top-to-bottom or coordinate. I just wear whatever has the best vibe for the day, and what's clean. Clean is important.

What's your favourite part of this outfit?

I have to go with my shoes. I picked them up when I was living in Scotland. Not because of the look, though - it's hard to find shoes with size 15 feet. It's like serendipity when you find a pair that fits. You put then on and say, 'Yeah!'

And I met this one guy in the Las Vegas airport. He told me, "My daddy always says you have to invest money in two things: a good pair of shoes and a good bed. Those are the things in life you spend the most time on." He's right.

I actually have a story for everything that I am wearing right now.

Tell me the tales…

I pick most of my clothes up while I'm travelling, when I need them. And I was in Seattle and I needed a black leather belt. I wanted something badass. I thought, "What could be more badass than eagles flying freely in the distance?" I bought the belt.

My man-purse is from the Winnipeg folk fest. One of the selling points was that it's the perfect size to hold a bottle of wine. It has an abyss factor - you lose everything you put in there, and you never know what you'll pull out of it. I definitely turn it inside out before I take it on an airplane, that's for sure.

My hat is from Chicago. I saw this hat shop called Goorin Brothers and it kind of blew my mind. They have every style of hat - they're good quality and they look awesome. They even have an artist series - they get local graffiti artists to silkscreen the inside of the hats.

And the belt buckle is from my friend Neil MacDonald's personal collection.

Where are you going shopping next?

Austin, Texas. I'm going to the Austin City Limits music festival with some awesome friends. I'm also going to… there's no easy way to say it. I am going to Wizard Academy. I'm taking a three-day seminar called the Magical Communication Workshop. It talks about the latest advances in neuropsychology, and then applies the ideas to strategic and creative thinking.

Sounds crazy…

It's fucking alchemy, man. Social alchemy.

What are you buying today at Comic Readers?

The coolest series they have right now is called Fear Itself. It's the latest story within the Marvel Comics universe. It ties Norse mythology into Marvel storylines from the last five years - Civil War, House of M [and] Siege.

Tell me something about comics.

People don't realize that there are several genres of comic book. There are so many comics to choose from!
