This ceramic installation by Winnipeg First Nations artist KC Adams was featured in an exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery last year called Winnipeg Now which was held to celebrate the gallery’s 100th anniversary.
As you can see from the above photo, it consists of a mini-forest of porcelain birch trees. Each tree is incised with corporate logos through a technique reminiscent of the traditional aboriginal craft of birch bark-biting.
The juxtaposition of the trees and logos invites viewers to reflect on the often troubled relationship between humanity, technology, nature, capitalism and indigenous land rights.
There’s an opening reception for Birch Bark Ltd. at the Dunlop Art Gallery’s Sherwood Village Branch (6121 Rochdale Blvd.) Saturday at 2 p.m. The exhibition will run June 4.
