Saskatoon roots act the Deep Dark Woods are going to appear in Safe Haven, the latest movie based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. “Appear” is a funny word — it sounds like they might pop up with a puff of smoke. To be clear, they’re not just on the soundtrack. They’re actually in the movie. A press release gives all the details and quotes the band:
Written specifically for the scene in the film in which The Deep Dark Woods play, the song was still untitled when the band arrived on the film set in Southport, NC after recording it in Brooklyn. It wasn’t until the band met actor, songwriter and friend of Elvis Presley, Red West on the set that the song was named.
“We had some great talks about Red’s history with Elvis and more. It was one of the best conversations I have ever had. When I mentioned we didn’t have a name for the song, Red took another listen and said ‘My Baby’s Got To Pay The Rent! That’s what you have to name it!’ So we did.”
Not only will you have a reason to ask the members of the Woods which is their favourite, Nights in Rodanthe or The Last Song, but it gives you another fun, tenuous trivia music connection to make. See, Canadian actress Cobie Smulders is in Safe Haven. She’s also in the show How I Met Your Mother, where her character once mentioned Yukon Blonde, Vancouver transplants and Prairie Dog favourites, a fact still mentioned in the band’s press releases.
