After getting off to a rocky 1-3 start at the World Women’s Curling Championship Team Canada skipped by Saskatchewan’s Amber Holland (pictured left) went on a 6-1 run during the rest of the tournament to make it to a tie-breaker. Yesterday, the rink, which also includes third Kim Schneider, second Tammy Schneider and lead Heather Kalenchuk, defeated Switzerland in the tie-breaker to advance to the 3 vs. 4 Page playoff game against host Denmark.
Team Canada won that game earlier today in dramatic fashion, tieing the game on a measurement in the tenth end before stealing three in the extra end to emerge with a 10-7 victory. In the semi-final, they defeated the Bingyu Wang rink from China 8-5. That sets up a title match Sunday between Holland and two-time World champion Anette Norberg of Sweden (pictured right).
In the round-robin, Team Canada lost to Sweden 5-4 on Wednesday. In reeling off five wins since then, the rink has struggled at times, but has shown grit and tenacity in overcoming set-backs and pulling out victories. Should Team Canada defeat Sweden tomorrow they’ll be the first squad in the tournament’s history to win it all after making the playoffs via a tie-breaker. Game time on TSN is Sunday at 7 a.m. Mountain.
