This Masterworks Concert by the Regina Symphony Orchestra also includes a performance of an ode by Italian composer Respighi to the Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli, but the feature work is the Fifth Symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler. It was composed in 1901-02, and is noteworthy for the trumpet solo which opens the work, and the fourth movement Adagietto which Mahler wrote as an expression of love for his wife Alma Schindler shortly after they were married.

If you’re a fan of figure-skating, you might recall Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir skating to the Adagietto during their gold medal performance at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and it’s generally regarded as one of the best-known pieces of music by Mahler.

Mahler’s Fifth goes tonight at Conexus Arts Centre at 8 p.m. Ticket info can be had at 1-866-973-9614. To give you a sense of what to expect tonight, absent all the lifts, spins, twirls and jumps here’s the aforementioned 2010 Olympic performance by Virtue and Moir:
