In August we had a couple of people exchanging Queen City Confidentials on the idea of a person, while they were still alive, expressing the wish to not have a funeral. The first QCC correspondent said to hell with that, funerals were there to help the bereaved cope with their grief, and that anyone who left specific instructions that they not have a funeral was a selfish bastard.
The second QCC correspondent disagreed vehemently. They said the person’s wishes should be respected.
Which brings us to the subject of this post — the movie Get Low. It stars Robert Duvall, who’s been winning acclaim for his role as a crusty Tennessee hermit in the Depression-era ’30s who decides to throw a funeral party for himself. It’s based on a true story, apparently, where 12,000 people ended up attending. In person too, and not just by clicking a link on Facebook.
Get Low plays at the RPL Theatre tonight at 7 p.m. Bill Murray and Sissy Spacek also star. Here’s the trailer.
