Too racy for Facebook?

That was apparently the case. When B.C. artist Kate Hansen (who graduated with a BFA from the University of Regina in 2001) posted samples from this body of work on Facebook last spring the social networking site repeatedly removed them. When she later posted a photograph of herself breastfeeding her account was deleted. (CBC)

Now, the entire series is on display at the University of Regina’s Fifth Parallel Gallery. In an artist statement, Hansen says she was inspired to begin work on the series after her first child was born in 2007, and after talking to other young mothers who were struck like her by the contrast between real-life and idealized representations of motherhood in our culture.

The exhibition opened Dec. 28, and runs until Jan. 14, with a closing reception on that date from 5-7 p.m. For more info visit www.katehansenart.com

Later this month, student organizers at Fifth Parallel are planning a Studio 54-style fundraiser at the Exchange to help the gallery purchase some much needed equipment and raise its profile in the city as a venue for showcasing student art. For more info visit www.fifthparallelgallery.ca
