When filmmaker Alex Gibney began this documentary in 2009 it was with the intention of chronicling American cyclist Lance Armstrong’s return to the Tour de France after a four-year retirement from competitive cycling. But then allegations of doping that had swirled around Armstrong were finally proven and Gibney switched gears on his project from a feel-good story to a more serious examination of the cheating scandal that ultimately saw Armstrong stripped of his Tour de France laurels as a seven-time champion.
