In movie jargon, the RPL Film Theatre is what’s known as a repertory cinema. That’s because it doesn’t typically screen first-run Hollywood films like mainstream theatres do. Rather, it shows films that are lower down on the cinematic pecking order as far as budget, publicity and revenue (but not artistic merit) go.
Thursday through Sunday the RPL will be screening a documentary called The Rep which was directed by Morgan White, and which chronicles the efforts of three film geeks named Alex, Nigel and Charlie to run a rep cinema. The film also looks at the history of rep theatres and their value in championing film as an art form.
Wherever White screens his film, he generously donates the proceeds to the host theatre. That will be happening in Regina as well. The Rep screens Thursday at 7 p.m. and Friday at 9 p.m. On those two nights it’s paired with the latest installment of Michael Apted’s on-going documentary 56 Up. Then on Saturday and Sunday there’s double screenings of The Rep at 7 and 9 p.m.
