Prairie Dog Vs. John Gormley, Fight!

Get this: I’m going to be on the Gormley show tomorrow morning, defending climate science. Yeesh. If you want to hear Gormley tear me to pieces, please tune in. It’s going to be a bloodbath.

And no, this is not false modesty. There’s a reason I’m in print journalism.

Anyway, why is talk radio interested in the prairie dog‘s opinion on climate change, you ask? Well, you see, recently we kind of sent out copies of our Climate Denier Declaration from two issues ago. (It’s at the bottom of this page. And you can download the declaration pdf directly at this link.) We mailed them off to right-wing pundits and climate deniers all over Canada and the U.S.

Gormley was on our list and his producer is the first person to contact us about it.

According to his people (actually: person, producer Tammy), as of this afternoon, Gormley hadn’t read the declaration so no word on what he thinks of it. I’m going on the show to find out if he’ll be signing it and sending it back to us. Hope he will.

Now, while I don’t relish the idea of dog blog readers listening in to what will occur tomorrow morning, I’ll bet the lines will be open to comments after our discussion. It’d be nice to have some clever callers to the show defending the scientific consensus on global climate change.

A whole bunch of calls would be even better.

  1. Listen up! Gormley employs an aggressive interview style honed and perfected by Ezra Levant. He will ask you a question, give you roughly 10 – 15 seconds and then he will launch a merciless interruptive process. He will attempt to never let you finish a sentence. His interruptions will come one right after the other. Your best counter is to slightly raise your voice and fully answer his first question while ignoring his second and third and fourth interruptive, aggressive questions. His goal will be to put you off your mark from the very moment he asks his first question.

Call him on it. Tell him directly that you were warned that he would do what he is going to do.

He will bully you … don’t let him. Raise your voice if you have to … he certainly will.

The right wing lack true substance. To counter that fact their only hope is to raise the volume and put you off your ground.

    Good luck!!!

  2. Use the word “gormless” once or twice early on to describe the climate-deniers position, it might throw him off.

  3. Leftdog: Thanks. Great point about the interrupting. I could totally get lured off topic by that. I’ll keep an eye out for it. Or, ear, rather.

You know, funny thing. I actually interviewed Gormley two years ago and it was a pleasant, respectful conversation. I’m kind of hoping we’ll find a similar rapport. But then not exactly hopeful either.

Greg: I think that might actually be too cheeky for me.

  4. Gormley has begun acting more and more like Glenn Beck lately .. using ‘whines’ and exaggerated emotional tones in his voice to make his point. Again, DO NOT let him get you rattled by his ‘machine gun’ style of interruptions. Stay on cue. Have fun.

  5. paul, what are your motivations for going on? do you hope to convince some of John’s listeners? have you considered that some of his listeners might be undecided? people tend to listen to radio and read blogs that support their own world view. some of john’s listeners might be quite interested to listen to you.

  6. I listened to most of the show today I think that you did a great job of keeping your message clear. Also, for those out there who had never heard a position other than John’s, I think that you may have sparked some interest because you came off sounding levelheaded and very knowledgeable on every point that JG raised. A big thanks to you and the rest of the Dog pack for holding these self serving “skeptics” to account.
