A few years ago, open mic nights were quite common in Regina. At one point, I think three were operating, where people who had a desire to sing, play music, recite poetry, read a story or otherwise perform could step up to the mic and give it their best shot.

I don’t think there’s any open mics that are held on a regular basis in the city now. But tomorrow night SaskMusic is presenting one at McNally’s Tavern. It’s being hosted by Saskatoon singer-songwriter Shulyer Jansen and the band Foam Lake. During the course of the evening they’ll perform themselves, and introduce the other musicians.

Doors open at 8 p.m., with the show getting started at 8:30 p.m., and there’s no cover. Some of the performing slots have already been filled, I believe, but there’ll be no shortage of space in the pub for people looking to have a beverage or two and listen to some quality Saskatchewan musical talent.

For more info you can call SaskMusic at 347-0676. And to whet your appetite, here’s video of Jansen performing a song called “Don’t Ask Why” with Saskatoon alt-country band Deep Dark Woods.
