From 1968 to 1970 one of Hanna-Barbera Productions more popular cartoons was Wacky Races. The plot was simple – it was a series of races and all the participants had a different theme going for them.
It featured 23 people racing in 11 different cars. Dick Dastardly and Muttley in the Mean Machine 00, The Slag Brothers in the Bouldermobile 1, The Gruesome Twosome in the Creepy Coupe 2, Professor Pat Pending in the Convert-a-Car 3, Red Max in the Crimson Haybailer 4, Penelope Pitstop in the Compact Pussycat 5, Sergeant Blast and Private Meekly in the Army Surplus Special 6, The Ant Hill Mob in the Bulletproof Bomb 7, Lazy Luke and Blubber Bear in the Arkansas Chuggabug 8, Peter Perfect in the Turbo Terrific 9 and Rufus Ruffcut and Sawtooth in the Buzzwagon 10.
The show was so popular that it had a couple of spin-offs. The Perils of Penelope Pitstop and Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines.
In fact Hanna-Barbera recycled the series in the late ’70s into Yogi’s Space Race. Same idea except with the more popular Hanna-Barbera characters racing in space (being that space was the in-thing at the time).
