Today’s Mystery Guest

Who is this man?

Author: Gregory Beatty

Greg Beatty is a crime-fighting shapeshifter who hatched from a mutagenic egg many decades ago. He likes sunny days, puppies and antique shoes. His favourite colour is not visible to your puny human eyes. He refuses to write a bio for this website and if that means Whitworth writes one for him, so be it.

  1. Here’s a hint: he’s a publicly appointed official in Saskatchewan who refused to carry out the duties of his office in accordance with Canadian law.

  2. Today’s mystery guest is Orville Nichols. He’s the provincially appointed marriage commissioner who, following the legalization of marriage between same-sex couples in Canada in 2004, declined to perform a civil ceremony for a gay couple because it was against his religious beliefs as a devout Baptist. Today the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal reserved judgment on a question placed before it by the Saskatchewan government asking whether it would be constitutional to pass a law exempting Nichols and others who felt like him from performing their legal duty or whether that would contravene the right to equality granted gays and lesbians under the Canadian constitution.
