Pick of the Day: Dwight Yoakam

Today marks the start of the 2010 Western Canada Farm Progress Show. Given the crap spring we had, where incessant drizzle/rain and cool temps limited farmers to seeding a fraction of their usual acreage, the mood this year is likely to be pretty sombre.

Helping boost spirits somewhat though will be this concert by veteran country and western singer/songwriter Dwight Yoakam. I’m certainly no expert on his music, but judging from what I read about him, he seems to come by his country roots honestly. In other words, he’s not a poseur puking up a bunch of lame-ass power pop country bullshit like other “artists” I could name.

Tonight, he’s in town to play at Brandt Centre at 7:30 p.m. Tix are $54.50. To get you in the mood, here’s the video for his song “Close Up the Honky Tonks” (YouTube)

  1. You are in for a treat if you get to see Dwight in concert. He is the genuine article and his concerts are always fresh, energetic and amazing to experience. His music will be played long after the pseudo-country lite performers have gone.
