Pick of the Day: Possible Worlds

This exhibition by Regina artist Sylvia Ziemann has been on at the Dunlop Art Gallery’s Sherwood Village Branch location (6121 Rochdale Blvd.) since May 22. It reminds me a little bit of a show Bill Burns did at the main gallery a couple of years ago where he presented a bunch of fanciful safety gear like eye goggles, respirators (pictured below), life preservers and hard hats designed for small animals.  The work was a tongue-in-cheek effort by Burns to dramatize how humans, through our disrespectful treatment of the environment, were jeopardizing the the safety of our fellow creatures on this planet.

In Possible Worlds Ziemann presents a series of makeshift dwellings that might possibly be built one day by people desperate to escape the ravages of apocalyptic scenarios related to natural disasters, climate change and pandemics. I’m hoping to do a review of this exhibition for our July 2 issue, so I won’t delve any further into it now. But this afternoon at 3 p.m. Ziemann is presenting an artist talk about her work at the Sherwood Village Gallery.

Also on today, CJTR Community Radio is having it’s annual garage sale at 1102 8th Ave. As well, the YWCA is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a street fair on 19 block McIntyre St. It kicks off with a pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m., with a variety of entertainment during the day.

Tonight, there’s a couple of shows featuring local bands and solo musicians. At the Artesian on 13th, the sublimely named Birds Are Dinosaurs are headlining a gig that also includes the rapper SoSo and Dagan Harding. Doors are at 7:30 p.m., with the show at 8:30 p.m. Tix are $15, and available at the door or else at Mysteria Gallery

At the Exchange, there’s a trio of local groups playing: Coelacanthdance, Intergalactic Virgin and Actual Lungbutter. Doors are at 8 p.m., and tix are $8. To get you in the mood, here’s the video for IV’s 2009 tune “Nicotine” (YouTube)
