Thanks to a loyal reader of this feature for suggesting Nick Manning (pictured) as a profilee for Porn Star of the Week. Until I Googled him, I must admit I was unfamiliar with his work.
It turns out that Manning was born in Chicago in 1967. Following his graduation from high school, he worked as a fashion model for a time before entering the adult entertainment industry in 2000. In 2003, he received the nod as Best Male Newcomer at the AVN Awards, and thus far has appeared in over 500 movies.
Along with fellow porn star Skye Blue, Manning is co-owner of Platinum Blue Productions. The company produces the popular “Fans Have Spoken” series where people log onto a website and specify what type of sex scenes they want to see the actors to perform.
In addition to his adult career, Manning has appeared in the reality TV show Hogan Knows Best with pro-wrestler Hulk Hogan, and had a bit part in Crank: High Voltage. In 2010, Manning starred as a strip club owner in the independent crime drama Cherry Bomb about a stripper who seeks revenge against three thugs after they attack her in the club where she works.
Which brings us to another Manning who’s been in the news lately: Indianapolis Colts’ QB Peyton Manning. As NFL fans know, the eleven-time Pro Bowler missed all of last season with a neck injury that required him to twice undergo surgery. Without him, the Colts struggled mightily, and ended up with the worst record in the NFL — which guaranteed them the first pick in the 2012 College Draft.
At 35, Manning is in the twilight of his career. But assuming he’s fully recovered from his injury, he’s surely got a few productive years left. But he was due to receive a $28 million bonus as part of a five-year $90 million contract he signed in February 2011, and the top prospect in the draft just happens to be Stanford Cardinal QB Andrew Luck — a two-time runner-up for the prestigious Heisman Trophy. So on March 7, at an emotional news conference in Indianapolis, the Colts parted ways with their star QB.
The move provoked a flurry of comments by NFL fans on TSN. I, for one, wasn’t surprised. As great as Manning’s been throughout his career, he hasn’t always delivered at crunch time. With the New York Giants’ victory over the New England Patriots in the last Super Bowl, younger brother Eli now has two championship rings compared to one for Peyton. Luck is very highly touted, and with the Colts in rebuilding mode, they could hardly pass up the opportunity to draft him and start laying the foundation for the future.
Manning’s health is also a question mark. After the two surgeries, will he be able to withstand the rigors of another NFL season? Still, as the TSN report notes, he’s likely to be highly sought after as a free agent by teams, and there’s a lot of them, who are weak at QB.
